Transporting your bike through IRCTC

Transporting you motorcycle is one of the most painful things . It’s like letting some part of your life in someone else’s hands. You see, I don’t transport the bike often due to the above reason . I prefer riding all the way to my point of origin .

But this time it was different . I was missing Rover too much and hadn’t seen her since 2 months as I had kept her in Delhi while coming back from Ladakh. I have almost zero trust in packers and movers so I decided to try out something new this time . Our very own IRCTC.

At first the suggestions from few friends seemed very confusing and tedious . But guess what ! It’s the simplest, safest and QUICKEST means of transport according to me. So here is what you can do to carry your bike as a luggage in the same train which you are travelling (I transported my bike from Hazrat Nizamuddin station to Pune station through Duranto Express train).

1. Go to the station a day before from where your train is going to start and find out the location of parcel office.

2. On the day of departure carry your bike to the parcel office minimum 3 hours before the arrival time of your train (Make sure that your train ticket is in CONFIRMED status).

3. Go to the counter and ask for the bike transport form. While filling the form I would suggest to put the bike value as 10,000 INR as 1% is charged for insurance by IRCTC . So ,you can save some bucks.

4. Get the RC, ID proof of the owner and your E-ticket printout (E-ticket on mobile won’t work) verified at the parcel office . You have to then submit the xerox copy of RC and  ID proof at the same counter.

5. Once you are done with the document verification (takes max 15 mins), pay the IRCTC charges (base fare for 350 cc and above is INR 2700 + 1% of the bike value). You will instantly receive a message from IRCTC regarding the status of your bike. Collect the printed receipt from the parcel office and keep it safe as you will need it while receiving the bike (Also for EX: if you need to transport your MH registered bike to delhi via train ,you will need an NOC from you RTO as I did for the vice versa ,I didn’t need to get an NOC)

6. The people at the parcel office will do the packing for around 250 bucks . After getting it packed in no time . Wait till someone from Parcel office puts marking on your packed bike.

7. Voila ! you are done with the procedure . Now the last and most important step. Make sure the bike is loaded in front of you. You will have to pay some 400 bucks to the people near parcel office who are supposed to put it in the train.

And here you go . Travelling with your bike in the same train 🙂

P.S : Make sure that you empty your fuel tank before packing your bike.
